Tuesday 13th March 2018

A really productive morning, especially after last night's grumpiness.

Started booking shows for James and I (covers stuff, acoustic) and also my JJ show tour - which will only be in record stores. 3 vinyl retailers have said yes already, which is amazing.

Still not sure what to do about all these drum lessons I can't actually fit in at the moment. Who would have thought this would end up being so popular?

Long drive up to Southampton, but to my favourite venue where I perform roughly twice a year.

Packed, busy audience, totally nailed it tonight. First half was 35 minutes of old stuff (but without any of the Grace/Tracy material, but still quite song-based), the 'silent comedy' routine is fast becoming the most popular thing I do now. After the break I ran through the Marvellous show and it's the best this has looked so far - I've found more intricacies in the work, more callbacks, the balloon deflating scene where Jessica 'dies' nearly made an audience member cry...like proper theatre! Following that with the cowbell/doorbell line really works, I can feel myself messing with the audience's emotions and I'm loving it.

It worked tonight for 2 reasons: 1) I've worked hard at getting this show in shape, even if there is still an evident dip in tempo at about 40 minutes  2) I had such a lovely (sold-out) audience who were willing to embrace the oddity of this piece. I was so relaxed tonight, I spent the first five minutes of the show explaining why I have Red Bull in my left sock...I always felt like they were on my side.

I won't get this everywhere, but the 7-hour round-trip was totally worthwhile.
