Sunday 29th April 2018

So hungover. We can't drink like we used to.

Struggled a bit this morning with that. Eventually sobered up and went with a nice restaurant with A for Sunday lunch, and then long rehearsal with the band - we have a dep guitarist for a few shows so needed to train him up.

Then over to the BBC studios for a live session, which was relaxed, good fun. There's a bit of tension in the band, understandably given the situation, but we're still bloody tight...

Saturday 28th April 2018

Plotting a tour of Germany for December, just because I can...

My current schedule is looking a bit daft, in a cool way.

Just the one lesson today as one of my regular Saturday students were away on holiday, which means I could take A to hospital for her neck scan thingy. Great drum lesson as ever with Stu, and then excessive beers/whisky with Andy...it's been a while, a LOT has happened since the last time we caught up in September!

Friday 27th April 2018

Long day of teaching - the primary school in St Neots, and then 2 schools in a row in St Ives. A lot of students today in all of them, it's quite exhausting, really.

Popped in to see Mum briefly, and then dinner with A's parents, which didn't seem as stressful the second time around. And then just slept, a lot. Work is taking over, maybe? I need to address this at some point.

Thursday 26th April 2018

Got the clearance for the other teaching work I'll be doing, finally, so that starts on Monday. That was kind of in the diary for today, so I had a little extra sleep, and then got chatting to scarily big producer types about my script. Two more of them have requested to see it, I've sent it to them...I'll be a nervous wreck whilst waiting for their responses.

New mini cajon arrived, it's pretty cool, I'll get a show out of that...

Great drum lesson with Tom, using the new cajon, followed by a nice lesson with Zoe's kid and then dinner with A.

I'm busy, but excited by all the possibilities of life...

Wednesday 25th April 2018

A bit like how Saturday's are commonly my favourite teaching day, Wednesday's are probably my least favourite. Well, it felt like it today anyway, as an old friend passed away and this naturally made me feel both sad and, on a totally selfish level I appreciate, guilty that I didn't see more of him even though I knew he was struggling.

I taught in two schools today and also had two private lessons, but it never felt like I really got going. I was teaching from 8.30am - 9pm but the enthusiastic, you could say somewhat eccentric drum teacher I normally am was replaced by a grumpy version of me. I need to snap out of this sharpish.

Tuesday 24th April 2018

Was going to have an admin morning, sorting out this radio script and getting it tight for the producer who wants to read it. Then had a call from a friend of a friend who was in need...she's got a gig coming up, she's a drummer trying cajon for the first time and needed an urgent lesson. I popped over as soon as I could, gave her an hour lesson and we've booked in a few more. She'll be more than fine.

Got back, did a bit more work on the script, and then off to a lesson with one of my regulars who is now a proper drummer - got him on the complex, Foo Fighters stuff now.

More work on the script, whilst keeping an eye on the frankly amazing Liverpool match...

Monday 23rd April 2018

Weds/Thurs/Fri this week will all be crazy with teaching stuff, but, as I'm still waiting for a clearance for one of the new colleges, today was purposely a quiet one.

Drove back over to St Ives and took Mum shopping, and then over to my only lesson of the day - one of my regulars, a lovely, lovely lesson today, very productive.

Evening we had our first Little Sparks rehearsal and it was just glorious - Alan and Kate were both on top form, so physical to watch, it has so much life to it already. Emily is leagues ahead of any director that's worked on my stuff before; I know she's got pedigree (her CV is outstanding and she's also working on other shows at the moment) - she's totally left my dialogue alone but visually the show is so exciting now.

We all left the first rehearsal buzzing, even our tech, Alan M who is, in the nicest possible way, sometimes quite a grumpy man, was repeatedly saying, "this is gonna be quite a good show, you know...". Drinks with the team in the pub afterwards, this is going to be the best fringe ever.

Sunday 22nd April 2018

Did a bit of writing in the morning and totally lost track of which shows I'm supposed to be writing and suddenly it was the afternoon. There's quite a lot of stuff coming up that I haven't actually written yet...

In the afternoon one of those milestone moments: A met my mum for the first time. And most importantly...Rosie, because the dog rules the house. All went very well, all is good with the world.

Saturday 21st April 2018

As always, my Saturday lessons are a joy. The first one is now a double lesson, as the mother of the child I teach also wants to learn so I do an hour with her after I've taught her boy. Lovely family, easy to teach, so respectful. Then over to Stu's to teach him for an hour and have a nice catch up.

Bedford gig in the evening, sold out show, most enthusiastic audience ever! Wasn't on it for the first three or four songs, just a little sloppy, but then it settled and it was a cracking gig, many saying it's the best we've ever looked. It's a shame that offstage we're still in a bit of a strange situation.

Friday 20th April 2018

Ridiculous day.

9am - 11am teaching at a school in St Neots.

11.30am - 12.40pm - teaching at a school in St Ives

1pm - 3.20pm - teaching at another school in St Ives

3.55pm - 4.55pm - private lesson in Cambridge

5.30pm - 7pm - a different private lesson in Cambridge.

Forgot to eat as was so busy. Made up for it later at dinner with A and a few games of bowling, great evening but that day was exhasting.

Thursday 19th April 2018

Was supposed to be looking after an ill friend this morning, but then it was decided that she wasn't ill enough so I had a lie-in instead, which was nice.

Did a bit of work on the radio script, confirmed a couple more fringe previews (literally squeezing them in around teaching stuff) and then off to teach three lessons in a row - 2 with existing students, and a first one with a new kid who is now signed up for weekly lessons as he enjoyed it so much.

Made it into town later on for a couple pints at Ryan's leaving do; a great musician who I'll miss working with a lot. He'll do well in Manchester, though.

Wednesday 18th April 2018

So here's the thing; on Monday night I got chatting to a new comedian chum at the show, we're totally on the same page and tonight he very kindly sent me over a very private list he's compiled of every comedy club in London, the UK, and quite a few in Europe. It's taken him ages to compile and it's lovely that he's shared this information with me because, you know, we're both trying to get somewhere here. There's a lot of venues there, even if I was purely doing the numbers game, I'd get a few of them. I'm not purposely trying to get somewhere as a stand-up as such, my stuff has never really been 'stand-up' and I'm starting to feel too old for this, but alternative comedy with drums as a nice sideline alongside my solo plays and stuff is still appealing. I looked at the list and got all excited, plotting a tour in my head.

I then looked at my schedule.

I don't have a free weekend until September.

I don't have a free consecutive three days available in a row until July, and by then I'll be up to my (massive) balls in fringe previews.

I like what I'm doing a lot, with teaching and all that, but maybe, possibly, this is going too far? I mean, some of the lessons today felt really great, especially in the primary school I was at (I felt welcome, the kids are progressing) and the international college (I now even have keys to the music room and I'm part of the 'teachers' band ahead of the gig - I got paid to rehearse with them today), even the private lessons went quickly enough. But today I taught drums from 8.30am - 9pm. It obviously means I can pay off any debts accumulated from when I had bugger all work around late October/November last year, and even suggests I'll be quite comfortable heading into the future, but I do have this fear that there simply isn't enough hours in the day.

Tuesday 17th April 2018

Nice to actually sleep in my own bed for a change, I've been all over the place recently. My last lie-in until July, I think, but even then I woke up before 8am...I remember the days when a lie-in was midday!

Caught up on show admin, but typically there's always a lot more to do.

First lesson with new student, she was great and is now booked up for weekly sessions, and then over to teach a kid who has been on my books for about a month now and that one is going well. Excited by the (kind of) celebrity who has asked me for regular drum lessons in Cambridge, it's all going nicely to plan.

Evening we had the latest 'Bants' show, which I didn't think worked as well. The guest MC seemed to dismiss the band as "just there for the interval" rather than being part of the show, which seemed to greatly offend them and isn't what my night is about. The acts were great but the audience small, my new stuff seemed to go down well, though - experimented with a new song and some cowbell-based stuff, all of which got the cheap laughs I was aiming for.

Monday 16th April 2018

Sleep would be nice at some point.

Anyway, woke up A's, and then took Mum shopping, dozing while I could in various car parks of various shops.

Then 3 different drum lessons in 2 different locations - I need to start earning proper money again after all this dashing about. There's a LOT of work coming in, though, I feel like a drum teaching machine at the moment.

Taught till 7.15pm and made it to my venue for 7.50pm for stand-up stuff. The 'Endurance' night, which on the local scene is feared by many comedians as it's an intentionally tough gig but you know, I feel like I'm on good form at the moment. Lost my cajon, it's somewhere, hopefully the band lock up, not sure, but either way I ended up doing the gig with a cowbell instead.

My 5 minute set was poor at the start - very rushed, lasted 3 and a half minutes, struggled without my trusty box. The improv round, in which the organiser Dan suggests difficult topics, went surprisingly well, and the audience interaction section was great fun - I basically got the audience to sing reggae as I hit the cowbell and I scored a lot of points for that. The show ends with the heckling round, but I was ready for them and it felt a lot easier than it should have been. I couldn't have done that a year ago.

Sunday 15th April 2018

Last night was a bit surreal, but we're making people happy wherever we go which is nice.

Great breakfast with our lovely hosts and then back on the ferry. 2 hour drive to Maidenhead for the 5th show in 4 days.

At the fringe this year I now have 6 productions heading up there, hopefully more, so I do wonder how my energy levels will be. I think it'll be fine, despite the fact that one show a day with the band knackers me out. I've started to realise, though, it's not the shows themselves, it's the travelling goes with it. Also, as a drummer, I work very, very hard on stage and these are 2 hour shows we're playing.

Tonight's gig in the arts centre was lovely, we've been here twice before and always do well. We're so tight now, even the pre-song patter is slick, it's just so lovely to be involved in something so...well, polished, I guess.

Saturday 14th April 2018

After the gig last night we travelled straight to Salisbury, where there was a bit of an accommodation cock-up but we got some sleep eventually.

Early afternoon gig in Salisbury was great fun, we've played here a lot before and it's a nice setting - there's a lot of people there I recognise from last time and we get looked after very well.

Mad dash after the show to catch a ferry, which we missed, but made the next one, and over to the Isle of Wight for the evening show.

Smallest venue of the tour, but we're obviously *very* out of town so that's to be expected.

Great promoter, pretty much sold-out show. First half felt very reserved, I mean - they were enjoying it, but it's like they've never seen a band before. The second half, though, was just brilliant - it's like they all woke up and the whole thing felt like a party.

Friday 13th April 2018

Newbury really was fun last night. Today over to Bath, another arts centre gig.

Lots of tine to kill but it's a nice place; found some amazing street food and went to a few music stores.

I don't know why I didn't like this gig as much, there's just something about this room that feels...I don't know, tame, somehow, but we still had a great crowd and everyone was onside. We were super tight today, but felt tired in places.

Thursday 12th April 2018

Back from the little break away and straight back on the road - this time with the band.

Newbury for the first show of this tour, a huge theatre space - 230 capacity. We had about a hundred in and it worked because that hundred were so enthusiastic and totally into us. Nicest dressing room rider we've had, the sound was great. Long, but easy gig.

Wednesday 11th April 2018

Second day of the holiday - okay, it's a two day break, but a great, old fashioned time has been had full of amusement arcades, fish and chips by the sea and actual quality time together.

We should do this more often...

Tuesday 10th April 2018

Buzzing from last night, woke up to a message from the promoter who sent me over the press review - a great review, I'm very happy indeed.

Spent the morning completing the fringe registration stuff, which drifted into the afternoon and then off on actual holiday with A.

Hunstanton, run down, out of season, and completely glorious.

Monday 9th April 2018

Up early to take mum shopping, got stuck in traffic and generally felt flustered. Got there eventually.

Long drive to Swindon for the festival show, aware that last night's preview was really poor.

Lovely venue, effectively a band space but they made it feel suitable for comedy. Lively audience, about 40 or so of them, and all of them just totally up for it. My performance was fuelled by Red Bull but it felt like I couldn't do a thing wrong - best performance of anything I've ever done? It's up there. Nailed it, totally nailed it, and they were onside throughout.

Sunday 8th April 2018

Woke up flustered remembered the fringe deadline is getting a bit close, started working on that and realised it will take a lot longer than I thought/hoped. Decided to come back to it later.

Read back on the stuff I've written for my Little Git show and realised I quite like most of it, as much of it seems rushed. Understandably, because it was. But there's no rush to make this into a production.

Record store gig with the band in St Albans, a bit cramped but sold a few copies of the new record and spent quite a lot of money on Chas n Dave vinyl.

Evening had a quick house gig around Josie's place, a chance to run everything ahead of the performance in Swindon tomorrow. This is by far the worst this show has ever looked, tomorrow could be tricky. The audience were lovely, though.

Saturday 7th April 2018

I always enjoy my Saturday lessons - the morning session with little Alex followed by the Stu/LoLo combo is always a treat, these lessons feel more like a social than anything else.

Got back, quick spot of writing and because the young lady is away had a bit of lads time, catching up with Alan and Rob over lager. Back in time to watch Match of the Day. These are good times.

Friday 6th April 2018

Long day of drum stuff - a crash course with Josie which was amazing. She's never played before and within four hours she had turned into a drummer, had her playing two songs by the end and much fun was had. We drank a quick beer to celebrate how well that went.

Then over to one of my regulars for a lesson which was good fun, before a script reading in the evening. It's a show that had previously been rejected by the beeb, but I've got a new producer contact who wants to see a script from me and I really like this one. Put together a little cast of Alan, Paul, Cat, Zoe and myself (plus our techie Alan, who drank ale and listened carefully) and had a run-through of it. It really, really works, to the extent that the cast just want to record it straight away rather than me send it around - we have the perfect location for it already and the cast is all there. We'll see - I need to write the other 5 episodes, but as a concept it feels like the best thing I've ever done.

Thursday 5th April 2018

Lost the morning in a world of writing ideas frantically into a notepad, one of them for the 'secret' project which is now pretty much ready to launch.

Quick drum lesson with one of my regulars which is always a joy, and then over to Bishop's Stortford with the band for a show. The soundman's car broke down and a replacement couldn't be found, so we did the gig totally acoustic - off stage, in the audience, true folk style. Went down a storm. Odd, but brilliant evening.

Wednesday 4th April 2018

The other day I had reserved for Devon...I just don't know what to do with myself when I have so much free time, all of a sudden. This is where things get dangerous - I start making lists, and then start working on the new projects...

I then remembered I have 2 film projects I started last year that never got finished so did a lot of work on those. One of them is my '50 Days of Drummer' idea, so confirmed more acts for that - Minnie, Hazel and Christian are now all on board too.

Evening saw A and actually stopped, just for a moment, and realised how cool things are at the moment.

Wednesday, 4 April 2018

Tuesday 3rd April 2018

Was supposed to be in Devon today on a family trip, but for some long and bizarre reason Mum changed her mind. Still took her shopping in the morning, whilst working on the 'secret' project.

In the evening got back and wrote till 3am, working on the musical. I'd really like to work with David on this (an amazing songwriter/pianist who totally 'gets' comedy) so will see if he's up for it. Structurally, it's a show I've had in my various notepads for about two years and is the best thing I've done...this really could be something marvellous. Pushing it for this year's fringe, though?

Monday 2nd April 2018

Busy morning of writing - the film script, the 'other' project, the musical...my head is a frantic mess. I'm well aware that next week I'm back doing theatre stuff, then on actual holiday with the lady for 2 days, and then have a 6-show tour with the band, so should probably be resting this week. No chance.

It may be a Bank Holiday but that doesn't stop my students wanting to drum so had a couple of really nice lessons today. As usual, both in different locations, which it makes not as financially viable as it should be, but a bit of pocket money, at least.

Sunday 1st April 2018

Really, really excited about a script idea I've had. It'll launch in July, and last six months, but nobody will know about it until next year. And...out come the notepads.

Spent quite a lot of the day working on my new film script, I've got a cast in mind and quite keen to get it done before August.

As it's Easter Sunday, over to mum's house for a bit, before back for more writing.

Saturday 31st March 2018

I always look forward to my Saturday lessons. Some may get annoyed about having to teach on a weekend, but these 2 lessons are with the students who have been with me pretty much since the very start. They allow me to experiment a little in places and it really, really works.

Anyway, that was a majority of my Saturday. In the evening caught up with old friends and got nicely drunk, a solid 6 pints, which is about 2 pints too many these days.

Friday 30th March 2018

Totally forgot it was a Bank Holiday, which nice - gives me more writing time. The danger of suddenly having free time is that I start working on yet more projects, when, it could be argued, the existing projects need a little attention. Still, nothing wrong with having ideas for later, is it?

Nice long day of writing, followed by beer and pizza with ladyface. Not boasting, or anything, but this is the happiest I've been in years.
