Sunday 28th July 2019

So hungover. So, so hungover. Ridiculous.

Once that eventually went, I managed to tidy the house...it's become a right tip since A has been away, it's almost like I forget how to use bins or something. It's now spotless. It took pretty much a day, quite a lot of it spent working out where 'that' smell came from (it was a dead mouse in the spare room).

Packed for the fringe, managed to get all of my three shows into one bag and all of my clothes into another. Which probably means I've forgotten something?

Saturday 27th July 2019

Did a spot of re-writing in the morning, grabbed some lunch and then taught my final lesson till September. Always a pleasure teaching Z, a great chap and so easy to work with. I just need to find him a band, that would be great for him.

Home, dropped off car and then caught the train into town. Ran the new show in front of Phill and his current housemates (I used to be one of them, of course) and, while structurally it needs to sharpen, it's certainly a lot better. It'll take a few days into the fringe, but it'll be fine.

And then we all got drunk and had a lovely time. So drunk. So, so drunk.

Friday 26th July 2019

Long sleep, and then into town to get a haircut and buy a load of last-minute supplies ahead of the fringe.

Three-hour drum course for Marcus which was great fun, the second time we've done this with him now and he's really progressing nicely.

Evening performed the new show around Amanda's. Always a lovely audience there but this show didn't click at all...all the material is there, the content is fine but the structure is highly flawed and I left early, being grumpy. I'll apologise soon.

Thursday 25th July 2019

Morning of final lessons before Edinburgh creeps in, three students who I don't see too often so a chance to run some older stuff (first lesson - kid has clearly just turned into a teenager and has lost interest, second lesson - wonderful, third lesson - too hot, but student coped well).

Home, remembered to feed the cats which is a bonus and then off to play a festival with Steve. Small tent, but nice musicians and we went down very well.

After that over to Josie's for dinner and a catch-up, weird not being onstage till whatever-o-clock for a change.

Wednesday 24th July 2019

Sorted my Edinburgh accommodation issues! Gonna be crashing at a mate's house for the first three nights (she asked why I didn't ask her in the first place, but it feels like she's someone I only ever message when I need somewhere to sleep) before going to my digs for the rest of the month.

Also, late last night I designed all of my Edinburgh flyers and they're great, just sayin'. Well, one of them relies heavily on a drawing of me that Johnny did, but apart from that, I'm quite proud of them. Got them sent over to the printers today, a bit close to Edinburgh but we go through this every year and they're very good to me.

Performed HG three times today, three very different shows (although given the restraints of the audio foundations, pretty much the same show). The first one was at my mate Al's workplace; an impressive new building and everyone seemed nice. It didn't work in the meeting room setting, it dragged, a lot, but it was nobodies fault. Everyone was still very lovely, the donations were generous, but it was a bit flat, I probably wouldn't have enjoyed watching that.

Back to my regular venue and the first show there was a stormer. I was very loud, more manic than normal. Weird seeing the fathers of my students all there on a night out, they see me as the 'quiet drum teacher' so to see me running on the spot and shouting at them was a bit of a shock but they loved it. It was weird seeing them, normally so reserved, so drunk.

In fact, I reckon, this was the best this show has looked, despite the ridiculous heat making everyone a bit uncomfortable. Lots of nice social media stuff afterwards.

The second one was to three people, I drank more water on stage than I ever have done, mid-show, but I was honestly struggling. It's tough doing this kind of thing in this heat. All three enjoyed it, but two of them know me very well, which is cheating, I guess. Either way, it's in a good place as a show, and so am I.

Tuesday 23rd July 2019

Took Mum shopping, she's got a few issues at the moment and I struggled with it.

Final day at the regular school (rescheduled from last week as they had an assembly), was very lovely but quite emotional as many of them are moving on to secondary school soon.

Then the long drive to Reading, which shouldn't be a long drive but it is because of roads and stuff. Performed HG at a festival there to four people, but, you know, four really lovely people who didn't seem daunted by the empty seats surrounding them and they were really nice. It was a slow start, a bit awkward, but really nice by the end. Also nice to catch up with my mate Mike, who was randomly doing sound that night. I make a lot of friends doing this sort of thing.

My ticket sales tonight covered exactly my fuel costs, which for, what was basically an Edinburgh preview, is more than fine, especially as I was home by midnight.

Monday 22nd July 2019

Yet another 6.30am start, this is getting daft now. At the garage for 8am to get 2 new tyres done (part of my MOT requirements) and then a glorious 3-hour lesson with Alyssa, followed by another wonderful 3 hours with Alison. I've written a really lovely drum course and it's been so nice to get it out there.

In the evening performed HG to 10 people above a pub in Cambridge and it really worked. A majority of the audience were mums of students of mine (who all hang out, the dads have tickets for Wednesday), it was a fast, sweaty performance but everyone really, really enjoyed it. I feel like a success.

Sunday 21st July 2019

Up at 6.30am ON A SUNDAY to pick up the pianist and then drive down south to play with Greg and the band. Big, major festival and a decent slot, too. Everyone on good form, I made one major fuck-up when I was being attacked by a wasp mid-song, but apart from that it was great...he surrounds himself with top musicians and we were all really on it.

Long drive home, but back by 8pm which for a gig day is nothing!

Working out Edinburgh logistics, major panic when I realised my accommodation doesn't start until 3 days into my run. Shit on it.

Saturday 20th July 2019

It's too hot. I know everyone's saying that, but that's because it's true. It's too hot.

Early morning lesson, taught with a hangover (predictable, after drinking with Esther) and then a two hour lesson after that, which was lovely. I like my students.

Got home, slept for a bit and felt sorry for my hungover self.

Evening gig for Inge was lovely - a 50th birthday party show with FH, good food and nice vibes in good company. A typical long catch up with Josie and FH were on good form. A great evening.

Friday 19th July 2019

A flew off to Africa to teach for 6 weeks, which is sad, but at least we've actually managed to see each other a bit this week. She's awesome.

Fun morning at my Friday school, a parent came in to watch a lesson (I invited her) and she was so impressed. It's all good stuff.

Private lesson was fine, and then another one which was really brilliant today.

Evening caught up with my old pal Esther, who I used to hang out with weekly but it's been over a year now. Typically ended up with a late-night whisky drinking session, watching the Brittass Empire till the early hours.

Thursday 18th July 2019

I hate this car. Worst car I've ever bought, and I've had some right shit ones in my time.

Failed it's MOT, got it back eventually four hours later when they fixed the suspension (and other minor bits). This car cost me £900 in November, I've since spent over a grand getting it fixed.

Two private lessons were both really great, but I was still annoyed about the car.

FH rehearsal was sweaty but productive.

Wednesday 17th July 2019

Long morning at the school, followed by a drumming assembly, which I hosted. I stretched that one for a very long time but everyone seemed to enjoy it. I'm getting quite good at this stuff.

Two private lessons (first one - worked, second one - bit excitable and overran) and then date night with A as she's off travelling soon. Went to the new wine bar in the village which is both lovely but horribly overpriced.

Tuesday 16th July 2019

Loved last night. Everything seems to be working out.

Great fun at the new school, complete with contract for next year. Get in!

Three private lessons in a row (first one - bit flat, second one - great, third one - really great) and then home to have dinner with A and her mate, Lauren. I'm clearly marrying a very good cook.

Monday 15th July 2019

As I'm hosting an assembly this Wednesday, I had to take Mum shopping today instead. She seemed in a better mood today, it's always so unpredictable, though.

Three private lessons in a row, a final three until September for all of them so a chance to run through all of the stuff we've been working on this term. They're all great, and I'm very happy that they've all signed up for lessons again when I restart in 6 weeks.

Then off to meet Alan, other Alan and Liz (former Blue Peter presenter, no less) for a quick look at some new scripts I've been working on. I've written four episodes of what will be a band soap opera, ongoing. They all loved it, feels like the tightest scripts I've written, so we're now plotting production dates. Everything feels a bit exciting at the moment.

Sunday 14th July 2019

Early morning lesson with one of my regulars; she's so talented yet only 8 or 9 or something. So much talent coming out of that garage.

Amazing five-hour rehearsal with the choir, it all feels a bit easy and I'm loving the vibes there.

Evening I had the first look at my 'other' fringe solo show, a house performance around Josie's. She's always so nice so it's tricky to judge how it went, but the feeling I got was that all of the content is there, I just need to tighten it. A lot. Edinburgh is a bit close.

Saturday 13th July 2019

Making taking on a 9.30am student for Saturday mornings was a step too far but, you know, I'm a man in demand and the fringe is fucking expensive. The lesson was great, as was the two-hour lesson afterwards with one of my regulars.

Met up with the band and off to play two different festivals in Milton Keynes. The first one was effectively a garden party but it was a good chance to try out some stuff, the second one was a bigger event and this was the best we've played in a long time. We've had our struggles, but you can feel us coming back to life. Home by 11pm, too, which is a bonus.

Friday 12th July 2019

It's too hot.

Fun morning at my Friday primary school, cashed in some wages, did some shopping, and then got annoyed with my regular school as most of my students were on a school trip, which I wasn't told about. One quick private lesson after (was fine) and then off to a fancy Cambridge college for a wedding. Free bar and great food, I danced like a loon and will regret it in the morning.

Thursday 11th July 2019

A lot of the day was getting flustered by the A14. What a terrible road, and I'm annoyed that I seem to spend most of my working days sat on it.

Fun morning at the 'other' school, they've just extended my contract, complete with extra students, so I'm certainly financially secure for at least another year.

Four private lessons (first one - fine, second one - fine, third one - awesome, fourth one - awesome) and then pretty much collapsed into an exhausted heap in the corner. I've got so much I need to do.

Wednesday 10th July 2019

Really, really enjoyed last night. My career is working, slowly, but after all of these years, it's starting to count for something.

Hungover morning at the school was fine, the kids just want the summer holidays to start. Took Mum shopping and she's clearly struggling a bit.

Three private lessons (first one - didn't really work, second one - awesome, third one - awesome) and then a cracking rehearsal with the choir band. Magical times being made, a pleasure to be back.

Tuesday 9th July 2019

Really fun morning at the new school. I like it when the kids are at this stage - basically they're got the raw basics down, and can now see how this fits in with songs. It's like magic.

Got home, dumped off car and then off to London to watch the BBC auditions of my little radio sitcom. It's not for broadcast stuff but still, being in that famous Broadcasting House, in the studio where an hour before they were broadcasting BBC Radio 3 stuff live, was amazing. The actors auditioning were great and lovely, my work is being well received. This is a total step-up, I'm a bit proud. Great networking at the BBC bar afterwards, too...

Monday 8th July 2019

So much admin with the fringe. Too much, isn't there? Even basic things like venue risk assessments seem to take over an hour. Turned down another fringe show because I'm a good boy...I've got 91 performances in the schedule for this year and don't want to get ill again. I was so tempted, though, but taking on another 23 performances may have been too much.

Morning spent catching up on admin and writing, before four private lessons in a row (first one - awesome, second one - kid got stroppy but parents are lovely, third one - awesome, fourth one - awesome...good hit-rate today).

It's too hot and I'm struggling with this whole 'quitting Red Bull' thing but the doctor has told me to. Ugggh.

Sunday 7th July 2019

Sunday...a day of rest? No chance! (that's actually Monday for me).

Up early, AMAZING private lesson - one of my regulars who has drifted a bit recently but was so brilliant today and her mum sent me a lovely message later on explaining how drumming has helped her daughter's anxiety issues and this is the first time she has smiled all week. This makes it all worthwhile.

Over then to a 3 hour private gig with FH, which was, again, a good earner. Lots of posh people trying to out-do each other, we were very much background music and I got sunburnt really badly.

Two private lessons followed (first one: fine, second one: brilliant, but sad because it's the last one with these people are they are moving to Yorkshire, have only taught them 5 lessons but they've been very lovely to me).

Home, dinner with A and then designed one of the posters for one of my fringe shows. This month is moving too fast.

Saturday 6th July 2019

Long day. Up early for my regular double lesson, only to find out that the student was away on holiday - they had told me this previously, it was just a bit of a diary cock-up.

Home to do a bit of writing and then off to Hitchin for a brilliant gig with Greg and the band...lovely audience, bit too much waiting around beforehand (but plenty of free food) and really tight set.

Drove straight from there to a beer festival gig with FH. Raining outside so they put us in the pub instead, but everyone had gone home by that point. Basically, played a pub gig to 7 people, 3 of whom are friends of mine. A really, really well-paid pub gig all the same.

Friday 5th July 2019

First school was fine, even though everyone is struggling with the heat a bit. It's all too hot, isn't it? All of it. So hot. They're all drumming well, though.

Went to the back to cash in some wages; using their deposit machine I managed to jam it with a crumpled £10 note which freaked out the machine and it ate my card. Major panic, eventually all sorted half an hour later. I don't have time for this sort of thing.

Second school was just too hot, the kids were so drained. We got through it but, well, roll on winter.

Two private lessons followed (first one: student seemed very distracted, the second was amazing) and then off to gig with Steve. Packed audience and a lot of good vibes, but the whole thing felt woefully underrehearsed.

Thursday, 4 July 2019

Thursday 4th July 2019

Exhausting day. Things shouldn't be this exhausting. I blame the heat. I am turning into the character in my play, I swear it's actually happening. Without the death bit at the end. I hope.

Teaching all morning at the 'other' school, which drifted into the early afternoon, and then I had to host a drumming assembly there for music week. V came down to sing and play keys and we played three songs as an impromptu FH duo, which wasn't as bad as it could have been. Two kids cried with happiness...it was their first ever gig and we struck a chord. We actually change lives by doing this, it's weird because to us we're just playing songs, but two of them really took this to heart.

Mad dash back, gave V a lift home, she did me proud today. That made me late for my lessons though and the whole day just kind of spiralled into me being later and later for each one. Four private lessons (first one: fine, the kid gets it, easy stuff, second one: another new student which I don't have time for but I struggle to say no and it fills the gap that I usually fill with the college stuff - he's young, never played before, this'll take time but he has a nice family and it'll work, third one: awesome, fourth one: really awesome - this was the student who I had double-booked twice in a row so had offered to do this as a freebie but the parents paid me anyway because of how well this is all going).

Left the house at 9am, home by 9.30pm. This wasn't how I planned things but the fringe is expensive. A is getting a bit concerned about my hours, my health, all that stuff. She really cares.

Wednesday 3rd July 2019

Morning at the normal school, followed by taking Mum shopping again whilst frantically writing notes for this new show. It'll be fine. It has to be. I mean, it might not be, it could be shit for a whole month, but I think it'll be fine.

Three private lessons (first one: the new-ish student seems to know everything already but I think I've found him a good challenge, second one: awesome, third one: really awesome - new student who I can't really fit in but his parents sent me a lovely email and it worked a treat, he's gonna be a goodun).

And then FINALLY, some actual time with A, where we're both in at the same time (she's been in orchestra rehearsals). Dinner in the garden (I got attacked by a bee), nice to actually catch up with my darling fiancee.

Tuesday 2nd July 2019

My second week at the new school and another fun one...it's just the enjoyment that the receptionist gets out of drum lessons that is so rewarding, she's SO into it. The kids are quite enjoying it, too.

Dashed out for three private lessons (first one: fine, second one: cancelled as the kid wasn't feeling well, third one: really awesome) and then rehearsing with FH till gone 11pm. All set for a weekend of gigging but still, it's a lot of work at the moment.

Monday 1st July 2019

Shit, it's July. Which still means I still have one Edinburgh Fringe show to write. I made quite extensive notes for it on Friday in Devon before things got...drunken. It looks vaguely like it could be a good hour. I've got three house shows, the first one next week, to make it into something.

The BBC people are still keen on my radio thingy, I'm back there next week which is exciting. Slow progress, but I did write it seven years ago so another couple of months can't do any harm.

Drove to Mum's and picked up the drums I left there the other day and inevitably ended up taking her shopping, even though that wasn't part of the agreement. She seemed happy enough anyway.

Four private lessons (first one - student struggling with the heat, we got through it, second one - kid had a total meltdown and tried to trash his kit, we'll try again next week, third one - awesome, fourth one - awesome) and then home. This heat is driving everyone, including me, crazy.
